The Journey Forward: Happy New Year!!

Greetings Joysetters,

Happy New Year?!?!

Yes, you read that right. This time of year is about halfway between the autumn equinox and winter solstice. As Americans celebrate Halloween with costumes, jack-o-lanterns, candy, and very likely significant alcohol consumption, this time of year also has significant meaning for other cultures and beliefs. The Hindu Diwali Festival occurs around the same time marking their New Year. The ancient Celtic Festival of Samhain marking the end of the harvest season and beginning of winter or "darker half" of the year that is held today and started last evening at sunset is considered by some as the New Year.

Regardless of religion or beliefs this time of year fills me with both dread and excitement. Dread because I live in Ohio. Very soon I will be enamored with the beauty of the first snowfall and then the dread of eventually being knee deep in it trying to clear pathways, the unsightly dirty snow piles along the side of the roads, and the lack of sunlight. At the same time I find excitement in the mysteries of the darkness and the future possibilities for when the light returns. As much as I complain about Ohio and believe that my future will be some version of a "snow bird" there is something to be said about the four seasons and the possibilities and gratitude these cycles can bring. I simply believe I would rather visit Winter for a couple weeks rather than live in it for months. :)

As I reflected on this time of year I was reminded of a post I wrote back in late 2019 just before the pandemic hit us and decided to repost it yesterday which I wanted to share with you today.

I plan on using this period of darkness to plan my next steps in the journey when the light returns with a few updates to the Joysetting process driven by my recent reads and rereads.

You can read the post HERE.

Happy Halloween, Happy Diwali, Happy Samhain, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I am proud to say I have built a habit of creating on new post each week for the last 6 weeks with momentum to complete the series in a nine week streak if not sooner. You'll find links to all the...

The Journey Forward: The Promise of Spring read on MICHAELWGUSKY.COM | February 3, 2023 February Self-Care: Taking Advantage of the Return of Daylight This week marked a few annual milestones / holidays. The pagan celebration of Imbolc. The Catholic holiday of St. Brigid's day or Candlemas. And the U.S. version of all of this as Groundhog Day. In the end, they are all about the returning of daylight and the promise of Spring. February can be a trying month for those in the Northern...

The Journey Forward: Happy New You! read on MICHAELWGUSKY.COM | January 14, 2023 Wow, it's 2023! Aren't we supposed to have flying cars and floating cities by now? :) I hope you had a wonderful Holiday season. I disconnected in a major way and chased the sunshine which was a pretty big challenge this past month. No matter how far south I went it seemed that the cold weather was following me. I managed to find that big yellow ball in the sky for a few days along with a couple days of...
